Ryan started on the first hole with an awful drive. It was then proceeded by ripping his glove into pieces. When all was said and done on the first hole he made a par. He birdied his second from 124 yards to get to (-1) on the round. The eighth hole requires two good shots to reach the par five in two. Ryan hit a nice drive followed up by a flared right two iron that found the pond. After a drop and two putts he dropped back to even for the round. Ryan again ripped up a golf glove which made it two in nine holes which is probably a record.
The back nine was a bit different. Ryan hit pitching wedge from 116 yards up the hill to some 10-12 feet above the hole. He put a nice read on it and made the putt to get back to (-1) for his round. Hole eleven is very reachable in two on the par five. Ryan was left with about 225 down the hill. He chose three iron and hit it right over the flag to around 20 feet for eagle. The putt was down the hill breaking about 3 feet left to right. The putt looked good the whole way and found the bottom of the cup for eagle! This got Ryan to (-3) for his round.
Hole sixteen left Ryan 154 yards from the hole. He hit a full 8 iron to about 15 feet below the hole. The putt was up and over a mound in the green. It was a putt he was aggressive with which made that putt find the bottom of the cup for another birdie. This moved Ryan to (-4) on his round with another reachable par five coming up.
The 18th hole plays some 35 yards down the hill. The second shot is all over water to a bigger island type green. Ryan hit a great drive leaving him 201 hole. The ball needed to carry 197 to hit land. We selected four iron and he came out of it just a touch to the right but still found the rough short of the green. The chip shot was relatively straightforward and it just depended on how it came out. It came out ok to about 5 feet. Ryan asked about playing the ball outside the hole and I thought it looked really flat. I told him I like straight and hit it and he basically did that to make his final birdie. He shot (-5) 67 for the second consecutive day to put him T13 going into the weekend 6 shots back.
The cut was insanely low again at (-6). Almost 90 guys made the cut which is way too many players. Almost 50 guys shot (-8) for the two days so scores are definitely low. So you just have to keep the gas pedal down a make birdies. We shall see what unfolds.
